Wearn Maintains Pressure At Laser Europeans

Published Thu 10 May 2018

Matt Wearn has taken the lead at the Laser European Championships with perfect results in near-perfect conditions on Day 3, while teammate Luke Elliott has maintained his place in the top 10 at La Rochelle in France.

Mitch Kennedy maintained his consistency to end the day in 12th place. However, Tom Burton faces an uphill battle after receiving a second BFD, which put the Olympic champion back in 37th place.

“We had two moderate wind races today,” coach Michael Blackburn said.

“Wearny sailed well to another two wins. In a different fleet, in the first race, TB got caught up in a large pack of boats over the line and picked up his second black flag.

“He rallied and won the next race. He'll be able to drop both BFDs after 10 races, but is under heavy pressure for the finals, which start tomorrow.”

Wearn, who won the Trofeo Princesa Sofia title at Palma last month, has scored five race wins and a discarded 2 in the six races so far. Finn Alexander is two places ahead of Burton, in 35th.

Racing starts at 1.30pm local (9.30pm AEST).
