The Palma 'Wins' You May Not Have Heard About
Published Mon 09 Apr 2018
Apart from the wins at the Trofeo Princesa Sofia by Laser sailor Matt Wearn and 470 sailors Mat Belcher and Will Ryan, the Australian Sailing Team achieved some promising results across the week at Palma.
Belcher and Ryan were awarded the top overall prize at the regatta, the Princesa Sofia Trophy, after dominating their competition. But 470 teammates Chris Charlwood and Josh Dawson could also take heart from securing a spot in Gold fleet before finishing 34th overall. 470W pair Nia Jerwoodand Monique de Vries missed Gold fleet but fought for five top-8 finishes from six races in Silver fleet.
Wearn beat a huge 183-boat armada to claim the Laser crown. But the Australians around him never gave up. Rio champion Tom Burton came 2nd in the medal race to finish 6th overall, while Mitch Kennedy and Finn Alexander ensured four top-15 finishes for our Laser squad.
49er sailors David Gilmour and Joel Turner fell just short of the medal race but had two top-5 scores in their final four races. 49erFX pair Natasha Bryant and Annie Wilmot qualified for Gold fleet and grabbed two 3rd placings in their last three races to come 17th overall.
Our four-man Finn squad started slowly with each sailing discards in the opening three races, but continued to battle, ultimately seeing Oli Tweddell and Jake Lilley to top-20 finishes. Tweddell scored a bullet in race 5 and finished 12th in the 73-boat competition.
Well done to all our nation’s representatives at Palma, the start of a long and tough European campaign. Now it’s on to Hyeres in France for round 3 of the World Cup Series, starting on April 22.
