Paris Olympic Preview - Day 1

Published Sun 28 Jul 2024

The Team is excited to launch into Day1 of sailing competition here at the Paris 2024 Olympics on the waters of Marseille.

Today we have three events on the program, the Men's iQFOiL and the Women and Men's  skiffs (49erFX & 49er). We expect all three Australian entries to be strong contenders throughout the week, athletes and their coaches are chomping at the bit to get out on the water.

There has been a really positive vibe throughout the team at this Games, with excitement and strong camaraderie formed among the athletes. We are seeing it around the boat park and at the team dinners we have been having each night here in Marseille.
Let the Games begin – ALLEZ AUS!!

MEN'S WINDSURFING - GRAE MORRIS (8:30PM AEST)

Grae Morris will be first to race today in what will also be his Olympic debut. The fleet will complete a series of four slalom races, and after finishing fourth at both the Olympic Test Event and 2024 World Championships Grae is poised and ready to get his regatta underway.

Grae is an enigmatic team member and has forged a great friendship with Matt Wearn, with Matt giving Grae advice and sharing his experiences of how to manage an Olympic campaign. We are sure these insights and those shared by coach Arthur Brett will pay dividends for Grae this week.

WOMEN'S SKIFF - OLIVIA PRICE AND EVIE HASELDINE (8:30PM AEST)

The 49erFX fleet will complete four races on the Frioul course today, and our team of Olivia and Evie are feeling great and ready to go. It is wonderful to have Olivia back in the Olympic environment, and we expect her connection with Evie to continue to thrive throughout the regatta.

The 2023 World Championship bronze medallists have been meticulous in their preparation and are locked into their processes for this campaign. They have a tight bond with one another and coach Victor Paya Canal.

MEN'S SKIFF - JIM COLLEY AND SHAUN CONNOR (9:10PM AEST)

This is the Olympic debut for Jim and Shaun, and they've really committed everything together with their coach Josh Porebski to prepare themselves for the Olympic environment.

They are tapping in to all the resources they have available to them to ensure they maximise boat speed, including spending time out on the water with our Technical Director Michael Blackburn earlier this week.
