Olympic Test Event Day 2: Nacra Crews Fire As Aussies Move Up Leaderboards
Published Thu 13 Sep 2018
Some great second day results have catapulted Australian crews into strong positions at the Olympic Test Event at Enoshima, with our Nacra 17 pairs leading the way, in 3rd and 4th place, respectively.
A one-two finish in Race 6, the last of the day, saw Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin move up a spot to 3rd, while Nathan Outteridge and Haylee Outteridge jumped from 10th after Day 1 to 4th.
Their big moves were matched by perennial 470 powers Mat Belcher and Will Ryan, who also scored a win in the final race of the day to move from 8th to 2nd. Elsewhere, 49erFX crew Natasha Bryant and Annie Wilmot scored improved results with each race to slot into 12th spot, up three places, and Finn sailor Jake Lilley did likewise and is now inside the top 10 in his fleet.

Nathan Outteridge was pleased with the Aussie Nacra crews’ results, in spite of the challenge thrown down by local conditions.
“We had an improved day from yesterday - we posted a 6, 4 and a 1,” he said.

“For us, it’s a new venue, we’re trying to work out how the shifts and all that. We sailed a lot smarter today. Yesterday I think we missed a lot of shifts and were in the pack a lot. Today we doing a bit of damage downwind by gybing a lot in the puffs and not really making any mistakes. It was nice to have a good day.
“I think one of the biggest challenges here, particularly in the Nacra class, is when the breeze blows from the south. The last few days we’ve been racing in the northerly, it’s been flat water, it’s kind of what these Nacras have been designed for. But all the training we’ve had here and the lead up to the event, it’s been from the south-west, big waves and not a whole lot of foiling. This week I don’t think we’re going to get any of those conditions in the racing. So I’m going to have to come back here a bit more often and try and learn how to sail in the typical sea breeze conditions.”
Outteridge paid tribute to Nacra coach Darren Bundock for his guidance.
“The Aussies are going really well in the Nacras. ...We’re working really well as a squad. We don’t get much chance to sail together. But we’re here and Bundy’s doing a great job of helping both of us out. It’s good to see both of us with a 1 - 2 in the last race today.”
