Mixed bag for Aussies in the 2019 Finn Open Europeans
Published Thu 16 May 2019
The third day of the 2019 Finn Open Europeans (Wednesday May 15) delivered two more races of the series and a mixed bag of results for Australia’s Jake Lilley and Jock Calvert.
Lilley staged a huge turnaround between races on day three, finishing 36th in race four and second in race five to move up the ladder two places.
Calvert had one of those days – a BFD and a 40th – and his only option is to put it in the vault and start afresh tomorrow.
“Damn it... Another frustrating day. Need to lock it up and start fresh tomorrow, there’s still half a regatta to go! The fleet is so high quality that you cannot afford mistakes like I am making. Goals for tomorrow are to sail the boat more physically, try for more good starts, and keep it calm and rational out there.
“The first race I thought I had a good start but must have just poked my nose out early. Second race I started well from the boat end, played the upwind ok, rounded the top mark in another solid position, somewhere around the low 20's, but had absolutely no speed downwind... a mixture of fatigue and throwing my technique completely out the window. Made and lost some places from there, but the damage was done.”
After another long day on the water, two more races were completed at the Finn Europeans in Athens. Ioannis Mitakis dominated the first race to take the home win while Jonathan Lobert owned the second race. After five races Giles Scott (GBR) leads overall from Andy Maloney (NZL) and Alican Kaynar (TUR).
Eighty four sailors from 33 nations are contesting the 2019 Open Finn European Championship hosted by the Hellenic Sailing Federation in Athens. Qualifiers are Monday 13 May - Friday 17 May and the medal and final race will be held on Saturday 18 May.
