Why do you enjoy sailing the 49erFX?
The 49erFX has always been one of my favourite classes to sail, I’ve sailed it on and off for a number of years now. The racing is always tight and it’s really fun - you get to race over the other side of the boat and hang out over the trapeze. You’re also going quite fast and it’s quite technical , so it’s sort of all the things that I love about sailing all put together in one big puzzle.
Why do you love sailing?
Sailing is the ultimate form of freedom. You’re out there on the water with no restrictions, you get to do whatever you want and make the most of what you’ve got. It’s always a compromise, you’re always trying to figure out how to do the best things in the best way you can. It’s always full on and I really enjoy that challenge.
It’s something that I’ve always loved doing and I always really hope that other people enjoy it just as much as I do. Hopefully you can watch us out there in Paris and see a bit of yourself out there too.
How much are you looking forward to competing at your second Olympic Games?
This will be my second Olympics which does feel a bit strange to say given that the last time I went was in 2012. There’s been a big stint in between so I definitely have a different perspective on it now.
I’m looking forward to enjoying being back in that environment with the Australian Olympic Team and really enjoying sailing in Marseille. It really is a fantastic venue, the sun is always shining, the weather is great and the winds are complex, so I can’t wait to get out on the water and give it everything we’ve got.
What would you say to someone wanting to give sailing a go?
Sailing really is a sport for life, it’s something that you can do when you’re five or when you're 45 or older. It’s a very welcoming community, so head down to your local club and get involved in any of their dinghy programs or learn to sail courses. There’s also always people looking for a crew, there’s always more room on a boat, so head on down and figure out what type of sailing you like doing and why.
