Meet the Team - Nia Jerwood

Published Tue 16 Jul 2024

With Paris 2024 now just 10 days away, Australian Sailing is proud to continue introducing the Australian Sailing Team members representing our nation at the Games.

Sailing the 470 class with crew Conor Nicholas, Nia will contest at her second Olympic Games at the end of this month in a slightly different format 470 as it moves to a mixed event.

We asked the dual Olympian a couple of questions ahead of Paris 2024.

How did you get involved in the sport?
I got into sailing through my parents. They love the sport and it was what we all did together on the weekends.

What’s your favourite thing about sailing?
I definitely love the community within sailing, but I also love just being out on the water, in the elements.

What’s your favourite place to sail in Australia?
Fremantle Sailing Club is my favourite place to sail in Australia. The water is blue, the Freo Doctor comes in at a reasonable time and the people are great too.

Who has inspired you throughout your sailing journey?
Belinda Stowell definitely inspired me to go for the Games and definitely helped that dream turn into a goal which has turned into a reality. Thanks Belinda!

How does it feel to be going into your second Olympics?
I’m definitely a lot calmer going to the second one. The environment is a lot more known to me this time around so I’m just really looking forward to it.

What would you say to someone looking to try sailing?
Hit up your local sailing club and go down on the weekends. There’s so many different ways to get involved from Tackers to a variety of adult courses in all different boats, so just find your favourite and enjoy being out on the water. It’s such a welcoming community, you can’t go wrong.
