Lilley fights to the top at Kiel Week

Published Fri 28 Jun 2019

A breezy day two at Kiel Week in Germany, Thursday June 27, and it was a second Australian Sailing Squad member’s turn to make pole position in the progressive pointscore – this time in the men’s heavyweight Finn class.

Queenslander Jake Lilley posted two bullets and a sixth, his drop, to lead the 25-boat fleet. Overnight he shared his thoughts on the second day of Olympic competition: “I’m happy to be back racing in Kiel. Just trying to get through the week without too many big scores and hopefully be in the fight on Sunday. So far it's been classic Finn racing with the top guys all fighting hard.”

Jock Calvert moved down a rung with a 4, 11, 7 scorecard, to sixth, saying: “Brutal day at the office; I’m pretty smashed physically. Even though I feel like I left a lot of points on the table today, I managed to survive and stay in the game.

“We’re only halfway through and there are still a lot of points up for grabs. The forecast for tomorrow is much lighter winds, which could shake up the field.”

49er

The Antipodeans continue to stamp their authority on the men’s 49er fleet. This time it was the irrepressible Kiwis - Rio 2016 gold medallists Pete Burling and Blair Tuke - who enjoyed the best day among the skiffs with a 3, 1, 2 in their qualifying fleet moving them two points past Wednesday’s stand-out Aussie crew, Will and Sam Phillips from Victoria.

The breeze is forecast to be lighter on Friday as crews vie for the top 10 Medal round of the Olympic competition, which wraps up on Sunday June 30.

Kieler Woche, best known as Kiel Week, takes place from 22 to 30 June divided into two halves. The first half focuses on the international classes while the second half shifts its gaze to the Olympic events. Across the whole nine days Kieler Woche hosts more than 4,000 sailors from 60 nations, competing in more than 1,900 boats.
