Lessons in Performing Well Under Pressure

Published Wed 29 Mar 2023

On 23 February 2023, Wing Commander Paul Simmons Commanding Officer 77SQN, presented to the Australian Sailing Team (AST) at their high-performance training camp in Sydney.

This camp brought together AST athletes and staff to prepare them before their upcoming European season and for their #PathToParis, for which preparatons are already in full swing.

Wing Commander Simmons’ presentation to the Australian Sailing Team focused on performing effectively around pressure and uncertainty. Themes paralleled in his experiences as an Air Force Pilot.

“At first glance there would seem to be little similarity between competitive sailing and fighter flying, but when you peel back the layers and address the core needs of both, the similarities are remarkable. These include the need to be highly cognitively and physically competent, constant pressure to bring your best every day, the ability to manage ones emotional state and fear responses, the need for resiliency and honest reflection on performance, and being able to understand and account for natural elements and competitors abilities which are beyond your control.”

“It is always a privilege to spend time with a group who are passionate and totally committed to pursuing a lofty goal that requires long term commitment and excellence. For me personally, I always come away from these opportunities with an enhanced perspective and a renewed sense of passion to pursue my own goals.”

Australian Sailing Team’s High Performance Director, Iain Brambell also shared his thoughts on the presentation.

“In order to prepare to perform effectively around pressure and uncertainty, the Team works regularly both on and off the water to improve their technical, tactical and strategic efficiencies,” Brambell said.

“Paul’s presentation was sensational and of the highest value to the Team’s preparation for Olympic qualification and on the road to competing at the 2024 Olympic Games. The Team’s reflections on the presentation were very positive, from both the athletes and coaches. This was based on the relatable information and perspectives shared during Paul’s presentation.

"Michael Blackburn our Technical Director, reflected on how beneficial it was for the team to consider and improve their clarity on how the mind works under pressure. As well as how to go about effective complex decision making in such circumstances," finished Brambell.
