Kiel Week Day 3: Shifty Winds Test Australia's Best
Published Sat 23 Jun 2018
Determined racing has pushed some Australian Sailing Team and Squad members up their respective leaderboards - including Nathan Outteridge and Haylee Outteridge, who won a gold fleet race in the Nacra 17 - but Rio silver medallists Mat Belcher and Will Ryan in the 470 and Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin in the Nacra 17 each fell back a spot as the Kiel Week regatta headed towards its climax.
Belcher and Ryan were consistent in their opening three finals races, capturing a 3, 4 and 3, but it wasn’t enough to prevent to prevent them being overtaken into second spot by Britons Luke Patience and Chris Grube, who scored two bullets. The Australian World Champions are three points off the leaders from Sweden.
Waterhouse and Darmanin scored 6, (18) and 5 in their three first finals races to relinquish top spot, but two other Nacra 17 crews made ground on the head of the fleet. The Outteridge siblings, in their first regatta together, won the second finals race, helping them rise to 11th overall from 18th the previous day, and Conor Nicholas and Hayley Clark moved into 14th from 20th.
“It was really shifty, windy, really tricky on the race course,” Nicholas said. “You had to be really observant to see what the shifts were doing. There was really close, tight racing, which was really exciting for us. Being our first event together, we’re learning lots each day and trying to make the least amount of mistakes as possible.”
Clark said she enjoyed getting into Nacra racing after her experience in the 49erFX.
“We had a really good day, racing pretty well upwind and just got to get a bit more confident downwind to fly it a bit higher,” she said. “We’re improving everyday.”
In the 470W, Dana Tavener and Katherine Shannon crept up to 15th, up from 20th, after Race 7, owing to better starts, while 49er team David Gilmour and Joel Turner adapted to the solid breeze to improve four places to 12th after their opening three gold fleet races. Kurt Hansen and Harry Morton lifted five spots to 33rd. Rio Olympian Jake Lilley is the best-placed Australian in the Finn, holding 15th place. Our Laser Radial sailors enter their finals with Mara Stransky best-placed, in 13th, while Zoe Thomson’s 4, 10 and 6 lifting her to 16th from 53rd.
