Kiel Week Day 1: Australian Nacra And 470 Crews Off To A Flyer

Published Thu 21 Jun 2018

Australian crews hold top spot in two Olympic classes after Day 1 racing at Kieler Woche in Germany, with the nation’s Rio silver medallists in the Nacra17 and 470 making the most of the moderate to strong breeze.

470 World Champions Mat Belcher and Will Ryan maintained their outstanding recent form with a win and a two, while Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin christened their new boat with a run of three first placings to start the regatta.

“It was really great to get racing again and we had a pretty solid day on the water,” Darmanin said. “We got three bullets today, which was a nice way to start the regatta. The last one we really had to work for. Jas said we’re going to send it and I just hung on for dear life.”

Waterhouse said the pair was keen to race after a stint of winter training at home.

“We’re happy. This is a brand new boat … we let it fly today. We’re happy the boat teethed in well,” he said.

Olympic gold medallist Nathan Outteridge, sailing for the first time with sister Haylee Outteridge in the Nacra17, were disqualified in the second race for an incident on the last downwind, in which their boat sustained some damage, though they are expected to be back on the water for Day 2. Another Australian Olympic gold medallist, Tom Slingsby, sailed to an 8 in his first race at at international regatta in the Finn and crossed the line first in the second race before receiving a BFD.
