Jake Lilley lines up for the 2019 Finn Open Europeans in Athens
Published Wed 15 May 2019
Conditions on day two, Tuesday May 15, of the 2019 Finn Open Europeans delivered the opening three races of the series contested by 84 sailors from 33 nations, including Australia.
Queensland’s Jake Lilley finished the top-scoring Aussie, 18th overall on the early leaderboard with plenty of racing to come.
After Monday’s schedule was lost with no wind the fleet was keen to get racing on day two, overlooked by the Acropolis of Athens in the distance.
There was a further postponement ashore waiting for wind to build and finally at 1330hrs the fleet was sent out to complete three great races in a solid but shifty breeze building from 10-12 knots to 15-16 later in the afternoon.
The top Finn fleet can expect challenging conditions this week as they try to conquer the Greek win and waves plus a star-studded international field including the likes of Rio 2016 gold medallist Giles Scott and New Zealand’s Andy Maloney, winner of the Trofeo Princesa Sofia in April.
The championship is important to many sailors because it is a nation qualifier for Tokyo 2020, with four spots available.
The 2019 Open Finn European Championship is hosted by the Hellenic Sailing Federation in Athens, Greece with 10 races scheduled Monday 13 May - Friday 17 May and the medal and final race on Saturday 18 May.
