Gdynia Day 2: Contrasting Weather Shakes Up Day Two Of The Euros

Published Tue 10 Jul 2018

Brother–sister Nacra 17 team Nathan and Haylee Outteridge remain in contention at the 49er/FX/Nacra 17 European Championships after recovering from a spectacular and concerning (WO)man overboard situation.

A sudden shift in breeze caused by a summer storm system hit the course in the last race. With the wind peaking at 20 knots the pair hadn’t set the boat properly and just before a gybe Haylee became unhooked and hit the rudder with her leg.

“Just before the gybe we got a big ventilation off the foils and Haylee become unhooked so we had a bit of a man overboard situation.” Nathan Outteridge said.

Nathan was relieved that his sister was OK. With some bruising to her leg and calf Haylee powered through and they manage to finish the race a few seconds behind the fleet.

“We soldiered on and finished the race just behind the main pack.” Outteridge continued.

The pair raced exceptionally well prior the incident taking their first win which keeps them in contention moving forward. Haylee is with the team physio and it’s more than likely she will be able to continue racing in the regatta.

Australian teammates Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin jumped 10 places to finish the day in 6th position. Paul Darmanin and Lucy Copeland dropped two places and are now 9th with Conor Nicholas and Hayley Clarke maintaining their position of 21st from day 1.

49er sailors Will Phillips and Iain Jensen performed well in the tricky light air collecting a win and currently sit 3rd overall. Climbing up the leader board are Lachy Gilmour and Ryan Donaldson finishing 16th from 28th and Dave Gilmour and Joel Turner finishing 19th from 41st .

49erFX team, Tash Bryant and Annie Wilmot had some troubles with their starts and technique in the first two races. After two black flags the young team found their rhythm and won their last race.

“We had two pretty good runs first but we got black-flagged a couple of times but we learnt quickly how important the starts were so we worked hard to get them right.” Wilmot said.

Tash Bryant and Annie Wilmot finished the day in eighth place with Ella Clark and Amelia Stabback placing 23rd along with Tess Lloyd and Jaime Ryan moving into 24th.
