Four More Years for B&G and AST

Published Mon 19 Apr 2021

The Australian Sailing Team (AST) and B&G have renewed their partnership for a further four years.

The new deal will see the AST continue to be supplied with B&G’s cutting-edge technical equipment for the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The partnership was forged in 2016, with the AST looking to secure their reputation as world leaders both on the water and in their technical preparation. Enter B&G, a name synonymous with being the best manufacturer of advanced instrumentation systems for sail racing.

Their technology has helped the team and its coaches as they look to navigate the tricky waterways of Enoshima Harbour, where racing at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will take place.

Australian Sailing’s Director – Tokyo 2020 Olympic Campaign, Iain Murray, shared his thoughts on the role B&G have played in support of the team.

“Our entire fleet of coach boats are all set with B&G technology. We get real-time data that helps drive the decisions our coaches make during training and that they can share on-water with our athletes,” said Murray.

“It is fair to say that it is those decisions that can help define a campaign, and we are incredibly lucky to have B&G technology to help us make them. B&G is certainly our weapon of choice.”

The new partnership will see the organisations continue to work closely together to develop both the athletes’ performance and B&G’s new technology.

“B&G has been at the cutting edge of sailing innovation for 50 years,” said B&G’s PR and Sponsorship Manager for Asia Pacific, Laura Tolmay.

“It’s great to see our products being used on water to aide in the athletes’ performance.  Our products are put to the test on water by the coaching staff – the feedback gained by the crew at AST enables us to continue our product development and ensure our products are reliable, robust and effective.”

One person well and truly in the driver’s seat with this tech is AST National Lead Coach, Michael Blackburn.

“B&G do a lot for us, without any fuss,” said Blackburn. “They really are a quiet achiever. B&G have been with us for a while now, and we have gone through a few iterations of equipment. All of them have survived well, especially when you consider the amount of time we use them, and the conditions they are subjected to.”

The AST have already put B&G’s recently launched Nemesis into action as they put the finishing touches on their Olympic Games preparation.

B&G’s Nemesis is a new generation of intelligent sailing data display offering unparalleled visibility, with complete customisation or easy to use pre-set multi-function templates and automatic dashboards based on the point of sail.

“Whether racing or cruising, Nemesis offers sailors the power to see the sailing data they trust when and how they want to see it, no matter what the conditions,” added Tolmay. “It provides an intuitive link between their instrument network and the real world.”
