Consistent racing from Aussies on Day Two in Miami
Published Thu 31 Jan 2019
Australian Sailing Team athletes have taken up solid positions in their respective classes after day two of the World Cup Series in Miami.
On a day marred by light and inconsistent breezes, which once again prevented the completion of the day’s full schedule, Australia’s Nacra 17 team of Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin and Laser Radial sailor Zoe Thomson both held on to their top three positions finishing the day in 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Thompson overcame a poor start to claw her way back to sixth in what was the only race of the day for the class, whilst Waterhouse and Darmanin are chasing the leading Brazilians who hold a 15 point lead after five races.
“Today was a really light day, but the race committee did a good job to get two races in,” Darmanin commented after racing.
“The Brazilians are showing great form in these light conditions so we’ve got a bit of work to do to push to the top of the podium. Hoping for a bit more breeze and to stretch the legs tomorrow.”
Tom Burton moved up the leaderboard and sits in fifth overall in the Laser class, having finished 4th in the first race of the day and a discarded 16th in the second race.
“Today was pretty tough, quite patchy and shifty,” Burton commented after a long day on the water.
“The breeze kept shifting so we got two races in but finally gave up on the 3rd race after another five hours on the water.
I had some good starts and linked one together but was unable to link the second start into some decent positioning and found the mid pack very quick.”
Aussie Finn sailor Jake Lilley boosted his overall result coming 4th today, and is currently sixth, moving up by four positions.
“There were some super light winds today, so I was struggling to settle into a direction. We had one challenging race in the Finn fleet, it was all pretty tight so it is all on the next few days” Lilley said on today’s racing.
There were consistent performances across the 49er and 49FX teams, with David Gilmour and Lachy Gilmour and Natasha Bryant and Annie Wilmot both moving in to the top ten after posting a number of keeper results in their three races.
