Australian Sailing Team members to shine at SailGP

Published Tue 12 Feb 2019

Current and former members of the Australian Sailing Team will be competing throughout all international teams taking part in the first leg of the exciting new SailGP series, which will debut on Sydney Harbour this weekend.

The series will be raced in a nation-versus-nation format at five regattas across the year, with the newly redefined F50 wingsailed catamarans expected to reach electrifying speeds of over 50 knots (near 60 mph/100 kph) promising a spectacular show.

The fleet of F50s have been modified and upgraded from the boats used in the AC50 class at the 2017 America’s Cup, and are expected to produce a 15 percent performance gain across most racing conditions compared to the AC50s.

The modifications include new foils and board cases, new rudders and elevators, new hydraulics and electronics, a new cockpit layout for five crew, a new steering system, and a new flight control system operated by a joy stick. The beam fairings and systems have been refined to allow more efficient pack up and assembly.

Amongst the six teams representing Australia, Great Britain, Japan, France, China and the USA are current AST members Jason Waterhouse (Australia SailGP Team) and Nathan Outteridge (Skipper of Japan SailGP Team), along with former AST members Tom Slingsby (Skipper of Australia SailGP Team), James Weirzbowki (China SailGP Team) and Iain Jensen and Luke Parkinson (Japan SailGP Team).

“They are amazing boats and the team we have representing Australia are motivated and excited to race. The challenge of competing against world class teams with the added motivation of representing your country is truly special and I will be giving it my all.” Australian Flight Controller Waterhouse said.

SailGP organisers have bigger plans beyond just the cutting-edge technology and entertainment on show this weekend, as they aim to leave a lasting sporting legacy through the series of regattas around the world.

The series is another fine example of how Australia’s elite AST athletes are able to take their skills and career to a new and exciting level through innovations in the sport.

“For me this is another way of improving myself as an all-round sailor. Doing the last America’s cup, I really enjoyed working in a large team and believe projects like that and SailGP bring new challenges and help develop my skills.” Waterhouse added.

The inaugural SailGP regatta will take place from 15-16 February on Sydney Harbour. More information on how to watch the regatta and boating information can be found here.
