Australian 470 Men move into top spot at Marseille

Published Fri 07 Jun 2019

A full schedule of racing was completed on Thursday June 6 and the Hempel World Cup Series Final leaderboards are shaping up nicely ahead of Saturday and Sunday's Medal Races at Marseille, France.

470 men & women

Australia's Mat Belcher and Will Ryan look well acclimatised to the Marseillaise waters after another outstanding day. Two bullets and a second has allowed them to leapfrog Jordi Xammar and Nicolás Rodriguez (ESP) into first overall.

The Spaniards led from day one but they could not match the Australians consistency. With four fleet races remaining there’s an almighty battle brewing for pole position in the 470 Men’s fleet.

Belcher and Ryan’s coach Victor Kovalenko reported: “Seven hours on waters today, four races in wind 11, 13,15,16,14,12 knots. Aus11 - 1,1,2,1. One race, after the boys finished first, was abandoned because ship crossed course at the back of the fleet. We need a good rest. Three races tomorrow and start is at 10.00.”

Nia Jerwood and Monique de Vries were able to drop their black flag result and climb up one more rung to 17th overall, Jerwood summing up the West Australians day three: “Today we sailed three races in steadily increasing wind. On the first race we pulled the trigger a little early and were black flagged.

“In the second race we were fighting inside the top ten until the final mark where we made an error executing our gybe. In the last race we had a clean start and a great high groove which allowed us to access the pressure on the left-hand side of the course. We made fewer mistakes and gains on the downwind to finish in 5th. Tomorrow the wind is forecast to be a bit wild, so we have an early start to try and get races sailed.”

Finn

Jake Lilley’s 9,2,9 scores cost him his earlier top three position, now 6th, and Jock Calvert is 10th overall in the division dominated from the outset by the two Kiwi sailors Andy Maloney and Josh Junior.

Hempel World Cup Series champions will be crowned in 49er, 49erFX, Nacra 17, Open Kiteboarding and Men's and Women's RS:X fleets on Saturday 8 June. On the Sunday 9 further champions will be crowned in the Men's and Women's 470, Laser, Laser Radial and Finn.

The World Cup Series began in Enoshima, Japan, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic venue, in September 2018 before moving to Miami, USA in January this year and, most recently, Genoa, Italy in April.
