Aussies in the mix after first day in Miami
Published Wed 30 Jan 2019
The Australian Sailing Team has shown strong form on the first day of the 2019 Hempel World Cup Series Miami, after light and tricky breezes resulted in numerous race delays and cancellations.
Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin sit in second overall in the Nacra 17 class, having discarded a 14th in the first race before storming back with a first and fourth to round out the opening day.
“It was an extremely tricky day today.” Darmanin commented after racing. “Unfortunately we just picked the wrong side in the first race but learnt our lesson and were able to port start and win the second race. The competition is hot here and mistakes are punished, so we are staying on our toes and looking forward to racing tomorrow”.
Paul Darmanin and Lucy Copeland came 11th just behind the French team on the same point level.
New 49er pairing Joel Turner and Tom Needham finished the day in eleventh, after posting a pair of 9th place finishes and an unlucky discarded 30th result in third race.
Fellow Aussie 49er sailors David Gilmour and Lachy Gilmour will begin day two in 18th overall.
There was only one race in the 49er FX class, where Natasha Bryant and Annie Wilmot came 11th, Amelia Stabback and Caitlin Elks 13th and Tess Lloyd and Jaime Ryan in 22nd.
It was a long day on the water for the 101-strong Laser fleet, with a lot of waiting and not much racing. After the two races across two fleets, Matt Wearn finds himself in third after consistent top five finishes, Tom Burton is in eighth after a 2nd and a 12th and Finn Alexander in sixty-ninth after a 19th and a BFD.
Zoe Thomson successfully capitalised shifty breezes and sits second in a hot Laser Radial fleet of 64 athletes.
Aussie Finn sailor Jake Lilley will be going into day two with what will likely be a keeper score, coming in 10th in the only race of the day with other key challengers further back in the fleet.
