Aussies battle unruly conditions on Day Three in Miami
Published Fri 01 Feb 2019
Australian Sailing Team athletes have walked away from day three of racing at the World Cup Series event with mixed results on yet another day of unruly conditions on Miami waters.
It was an early start on day three, with some of the classes completing up to four races in an attempt to play catchup after numerous missed races due to light winds earlier in the week.
Australia’s Nacra 17 teams both find themselves in the top five, with Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin still in second but closing the gap on the leading Brazilian team and Paul Darmanin and Lucy Copeland rising to 4th after two second place finishes amongst the four races today.
“It was a very tricky day with lots of rain clouds affecting the wind causing shifty and gusty conditions” Copeland said after the day’s racing. “We sailed well, keeping our heads out of the boat and constantly watching the wind”.
Laser sailors Matthew Wearn and Tom Burton finished the day in 10th and 12th positions overall respectively after a day of challenging racing.
“We got 3 races in, in what were some very tough conditions” Wearn said after a long seven-hour day on the water. “There were plenty of shifts to deal with, but I will be looking to finish the final four races off well to take something from the week.”
Jake Lilley maintained his sixth position in the Finn class after three races today. “The wind was better but still mostly light and really tricky, making it hard to find good grooves around the course” Lilley commented.
The 49er team David Gilmour and Lachy Gilmour focused on consistency and will be going into the fourth day in 7th position and ready to move in to medal contention.
The Aussies find themselves with two teams in the top ten in 49erFX, with Natasha Bryant and Annie Wilmot and Amelia Stabback and Caitlin Elks in 8th and 10th places respectively.
“It was nice to stretch the legs today with a bit more wind.” Bryant commented after their third place in the second race. “The wind was gradually building as we got out to the course and was steady for our first race. Half way through our second race the wind died out and there wasn’t enough to start a third race. It was very tight racing today with a lot of congestion at mark rounding’s so small mistakes were very costly.”
