49er Crews Gear Up For Medemblik Regatta
Published Mon 21 May 2018
Australian Sailing Team pair David Gilmour and Joel Turner will be joined by Australian Sailing Squad duo, David’s younger brother, Lachy Gilmour, and Ryan Donaldson in the 50-boat fleet.
Among those standing in the Australians’ way are Spain’s World No.4 pair Botin le Chever and Lopez Marra, Argentina’s World No.7s Yago Lange and Klaus Lange, and Canada’s Junior 49er World Champions, William Jones and Evan DePaul.
National champions Gilmour and Turner are No.10 in the world and are coming off a fourth-placing at the Hyeres World Cup Series event last month.
Australian Sailing Team Finn sailor Jake Lilley was entered to compete at Medemblik, however organisers announced on May 1 that low entry numbers forced the cancellation of the Finn class from the regatta, as well as the 470 male and female classes.
Meanwhile, Medemblik is part of the return campaign of Laser Radial sailor Jacinta Ainsworth, a former youth sailing star who stepped away from competition for 18 months to apply herself to her studies. Ainsworth got back into the boat during the Australian summer, including for the Sail Sydney and Sail Melbourne regattas.
The Medemblik Regatta features 320 registrations in eight classes.
Racing is scheduled for May 22-26 - see Race Schedule
