470 European Championship about to begin on Italy’s Ligurian Riviera
Published Fri 10 May 2019
Three AST/ASS pairings are ready for intense action to begin at the 470 European Championship in Marina degli Aregai, on Italy’s Ligurian Riviera.
On Tuesday evening sailors, coaches and organisers gathered for the opening ceremony. Now 111 men’s and women’s teams are focused on the commencement of racing on Wednesday May 8 and due to wrap-up on Tuesday 14.
The competition comprises a series of fleet races, either trapezoid or windward/leeward, plus a final medal race for the top 10 teams in each fleet.
The first gun is scheduled for 12:00 Wednesday for a maximum of three races per day. The men’s fleet will be split in two groups while the women will race a single fleet.
Dual 470 gold medallist Mat Belcher and his silver medal winning crew from Rio 2016, Will Ryan, are looking to improve on their Genoa World Cup Series result of tenth overall.
Second Australian men’s duo of Chris Charlwood (WA) and Josh Dawson (NSW) are enjoying the calm before the storm, Charlwood saying this morning Sydney time: “We’ve had a few days off to prepare for some tough racing ahead. It should be another light wind venue but I’m sure we can make the most of these conditions and come away with a solid result.”
Nia Jerwood and Monique de Vries, both from Western Australia, will face the usual standard of fleet as 470 teams try to impress selectors and earn results good enough to support their bid for Tokyo 2020.
Organised by Yacht Club Sanremo in co-operation with Yacht Club degli Aregai plus the Italian and International 470 class, the 470 European Championship boasts a truly world class line-up.
