Olympic Test Event Day 3: Venue Proving An Enigma For Olympic Hopefuls

Published Fri 14 Sep 2018

The 2020 Olympic venue continues to present unpredictable and complex conditions, testing Australian sailors’ skills and patience on the third day of the Test Event at Enoshima.

Despite the dying and shifting offshore breeze, Finn sailor Jake Lilley, Nacra 17 pairs Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin, and Nathan and Haylee Outteridge, as well as 49er pair David and Lachy Gilmour, all registered race wins.

“Really tricky winds,” said Lilley, who is now in 6th place.

“We did the first race in around seven knots and the second race in around three to four knots, so quite a light day. It’s always challenging when you’ve got to sail in those conditions.

“You can put a lot of points on the board, but I managed to have good starts and was fortunate enough to win the first race. In the second race I chipped away and had a top 10. Two keepers on a day like that is big, so I’m pretty happy.”

The variant winds put Laser sailor Matt Wearn to the test, with the World Championship silver medallist managing a 19 in the only race of the day.

“These northerlies are super hard to predict,” Wearn said.

“They’re quite close to shore here as well, it comes off the land and comes off in all different directions. Getting your head around that is going to be pretty important, trying to figure out if there’s any patterns with it at all or if it is purely random.”

In the 470W Nia Jerwood and Monique de Vries moved up a spot to 12th, 49erFX pair Natasha Bryant and Annie Wilmot scored a 13 to move into the top 10 in their fleet, and Mat Belcher and Will Ryan are 2nd in the 470M though 13 net points behind the leaders from the host country.
