Published Fri 19 Jul 2024
Paris 2024 is now just days away, and Australian Sailing is proud to introduce two of the final members of the Australian Sailing Team representing Australia at the Games.
Competing together in the 49er class in Marseille are Sydney-grown sailors Jim Colley and Shaun Connor, who have been competing both against each other and together since they were young.
We caught up with the 49er team ahead of the Olympic Games.

Where did you grow up sailing?
Jim: I grew up sailing in Pittwater. Dad built me a boat in the backyard when I was five and pushed me off and said ‘good luck to you’, so I sailed around Pittwater for five years before joining the Avalon Sailing Club and then the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club.
Shaun: I grew up sailing out of Middle Harbour Skiff Club. I sailed Manly Juniors with my older brother.
What got you into the 49er class?
Shaun: I’ve always wanted to sail the 49er, ever since Jim and I were first sailing opti’s against each other. We always used to talk about it and joke about who was going to steer and crew so it’s really been a long term thing. I’ve always wanted to sail one but I also think it’s important to sail whatever boat you can get your hands on.
What would you say to someone looking to get involved in sailing?
Jim: There really isn’t anything better than being out on the water, so go down to your local club, jump on any boat and just start learning. It’s an amazing sport and teaches you so much about racing, about teamwork and about the weather, so just begin.
What’s your favourite thing about sailing?
Shaun: My favourite thing is just being out there on your own or with a select group of people and just focusing on making a boat go fast and harnessing the wind as best as you can.
